Power Outage Lighting Checklist
Prepare several safe, easy-to-reach light sources and test them before severe weather or an unexpected interruption.
Cover the routes that matter first
Prioritize stairs, hallways, bathrooms, kitchens, entry points, and any area where someone may need medication or mobility assistance. A single light in the living room does not make the rest of the home safe to navigate.
Use more than one type of light
Hands-free light
A headlamp or fixed backup light helps when carrying supplies or assisting someone.
Portable light
A flashlight or hanging light can move between rooms and vehicles.
Room light
A lantern or compatible backup bulb can provide broader illumination.
Test before the outage
- Charge rechargeable lights fully and install fresh batteries where needed.
- Confirm each light’s controls and intended operating mode.
- Test automatic backup products in the exact fixture or circuit where they will be used.
- Store a copy of the instructions with the emergency kit.
- Set a regular reminder to recharge and retest.
Keep basic safety in the plan
Avoid open flames when safer electric lighting is available. Keep exits clear, follow manufacturer instructions, and do not use a product in wet or outdoor conditions unless it is specifically rated for that use.
